Flat pattern drafting is the art of taking a set of measurements, a sheet of paper, and a pen, and coming away with a pattern. If you don't have a dummy, all you have are measurements, or you're making a hat, it's the way to go. (And if you're making your first corset, you more or less have to do it this way.) This is, arguably, the more "period" method of making up a pattern.
