See, by using these direction instead of buying a commercial pattern, you got a custom fitted piece and you saved anywhere between 5$ and 45$. If you send me some of that, I can afford the time to work in this site, instead of working on paying gigs. And we all win.

Ye Tailor's Little Booke of Geometries presents:

Worksheet: Skirt Length

This is a worksheet to go with the article on Figuring Skirt Length, mostly because I acknowledge that the original article has too many words to be an easy reference. Fortunately, it's like, 9 steps tops.

Measurements You'll Need:

Pleat Support? What?! Ok, here's what I'm saying: If you are wearing a bum roll, padding out cartridge pleats, or generally doing anything that makes your skirt move straight away from your waist at the top, rather than falling down along the farthingale, then you have a pleat support. (Yes, I just made the term up because I needed something generic.) The depth of the pleat support is how far it makes your skirts stand straight away from your body before they begin their fall.

What To Do:

Step Calculate Result
1 (Waist) divided by 6.28
2 (Hoopskirt Circumference) divided by 6.28
3 (result from step 1) minus (result from step 2)
4 (Waist to Ground) times (Waist to Ground)
5 (result from step 3) times (result from step 3)
6 Add (result from step 4) to (result from step 5)
7 Take the square root of (result from step 6)
---

If you are not wearing a bum roll, padding out your pleats, etc, you're done. Step 7 is your skirt length.

If you do have some form of skirt support, Step 7 only gives you the length of the unsupported skirts at the Center Front. For the Side and Center Back lengths, continue on:

8 Side Length: (result from step 7) plus (Depth of Pleat Support at Side)
9 Center Back Length: (result from step 7) plus (Depth of Pleat Support at Center Back)
